Our Beautiful Adventure at Lake Powell (Renting a Pontoon at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area)

When you visit Page, Arizona, there are so many fun things to choose from to do! Our family was on a big road trip across the Southwest United States, and one of the stops on our trip was Page, Arizona! Page has a number of amazing features right in the area, and it was hard to pick just a few to see since we were only there for one day. Much more time could easily be spent there!

Things To Do in Page, Arizona

Our first stop in Page was at the Upper Antelope Canyon. This is an amazing natural slot canyon and you can check out our post if you want to read more about it!

The second stop we made was at Lake Powell. Truth be told, John wanted to rent jet skis, and I just sorta don’t like water in my face, and overrode his dream (I will admit, it would have been pretty cool) and we rented a pontoon instead (still pretty cool).

The third place we stopped was another iconic landscape… Horseshoe Bend. We made it there just in time for sunset and it was an absolutely amazing sight!

A couple of the things we didn’t have time to do since we were just a short stay there are visiting Rainbow Bridge, The Wave, and Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. This area is absolutely beautiful and a full trip to just hang out there would be fun to go back for!

Lake Powell and the Glen Canyon Dam

How is Lake Powell formed?

Lake Powell is formed by the 710 foot tall Glen Canyon Dam on the Colorado River. The Glen Canyon Dam is in Page, Arizona and begins the 186 miles long stretch that is Lake Powell. The Glen Canyon National Recreation Area covers 1.25 million acres and ranges from Lees Ferry, Arizona to the Orange Cliffs of southern Utah.

One of the reasons we took this trip when we did was because my son was a 4th grader. Did you know that 4th graders get into national parks and national lands for the entire year by using the Every Kid Outdoors Pass? (Their families get in too, as long as you’re in the same car!) The Glen Canyon National Recreation Area is run by the national park service, so guess what!? The Every Kid Outdoors Pass will get you into this area as well! I didn’t realize that renting boat on the lake would bring us into that area (ok, I didn’t realize it was an area at all)… but it was a great surprise that we could use the pass to get in, and it saved on that expense!

Antelope Point Marina

The place we decided to rent a boat was at the Antelope Point Marina. When we visited, the water levels were really low. The lake is basically canyon walls that have been filled with water. Since the water was so low, you park in the parking lot, check in at the rental place on the top of the canyon, and then we got a ride down to the water on a golf cart! They had an amazing system to shuttle people up and down, with golf carts and “roads” created out of ramp they had laid out in a network down to the docks.

There are boat cruises, boat and jet ski rentals, and lots of house boats in the marina. It was a lot of fun checking out all the places that people had on the lake!

Pontooning on Lake Powell

We rented a pontoon for a couple of hours and checked out the lake! The company we rented from gave us some advice about which way to go and what to expect as we went off on our adventure.

As you drive down into the lake, the sandstone canyon walls loom up all around you. As I mentioned, the water levels that year were really low. If I’m remembering right, the water was about 100 feet low, so those canyon walls were TALL above us! You could see the water levels on the canyon walls. The lake is a long meandering lake, and it’s fun to see what is beyond each corner of the rock walls as you go. Cruising along through the blue water was so beautiful and so much fun!

The pontoon we rented had plenty of room for our group of four and definitely could have held more people. It was easy to operate and had a nice sun shade. We visited during June, and it was hot outside, so the shade was welcome!
