The Firehole Canyon Drive is just south of the intersection where the road that leads from the West Entrance of Yellowstone National Park meets the Grand Loop Road. The Firehole Canyon Road leads you along a one way road that winds along the beautiful Firehole River. There are pull out points where you can stop to take in the gorgeous views of the canyon walls and the river that flows along at the base.
Near the end of the one-way drive, there is a pull out area where you can climb down to the base of the river near a waterfall. We did a little bit of climbing on the rocks in the area and dipped our toes in the shallow water that pools to the side of the waterfall area.
There is so, so much to see in Yellowstone National Park! If you have time to take a quick trip off of the main road onto this quick detour, it’s totally worth the stop. The canyon is beautiful and a great place to stretch a little bit! (And maybe cool off a little if you’re there during the hot summer months!)
The waterfall is near the end of the one-way road, just before where the Firehole Canyon Drive rejoins the Grand Loop Road.
The morning we went to this stop, we had started our day out after staying at the Old Faithful Snow Lodge. Our first stop was the hike to the Grand Prismatic Spring Overlook and Fairy Falls. We met my brother’s family for a picnic at the Gibbon Falls Picnic Ground. During this picnic we were able to recreate this look from an amazing trip that our extended family had taken when we were kids!
We parted ways with my brother’s family as they headed back home and we trekked on for an extra day on our trip… after the stop at the Firehole Canyon Drive, we did another hike to see Mystic Falls. I’ll share that in another post, but I will say, that it was ah-may-zing!!! Stay tuned!
As I said above, there is so much to see in Yellowstone National Park, but I feel like whatever parts you decide to see while you’re there, you’re almost guaranteed to not be disappointed! The entire area is so beautiful and it is a very spiritual experience to spend time there!
