Yellowstone National Park: Undine Falls and Wraith Falls

Walking through the North Entrance to Yellowstone National Park

In the northwest corner of Yellowstone National Park, just east of Mammoth Hot Springs are a couple of neat waterfalls! Travel east on the Grand Loop Road, and just off of the road is Undine Falls. It was the first waterfall that we stopped to see on our trip around the park.

Undine Falls at Yellowstone National Park

A parking lot off of the Grand Loop Road is just steps away from the overlook to Undine Falls. The falls make a 60 foot drop down a cliff of basalt lava flow on Lava Creek. The overlook sits above the level of the falls and the drop from the overlook is straight down! The overlook’s dramatic placement makes the falls even that much more impressive!

Stopping to see Undine Falls is quick and easy and worth pulling over for!

Wraith Falls is a little big further east on the Grand Loop Road. The falls are about a half mile hike from the parking lot, so it’s about a mile round trip. The hike in to see the falls is fairly easy. It’s a pretty level dirt path that starts out walking through a meadow of wildflowers.

You’ll cross a small bridge over Lupine Creek and then there are some steps that lead to the overlook of Wraith Falls.

We stopped at the bridge that goes over the creek to let the kids play around a little bit. Does water draw anyone else in the way it does us?

Wraith Falls drops 79 feet down a basalt lava flow. These falls are really unique looking! The water seems to shimmer down and almost looks like it could be a huge waterslide! After the main waterfall, the water tumbles down the hillside in mini waterfalls all along the trail.

The hike in to see the falls is pretty easy and only about a mile, round trip. The falls are really unique which I think makes it worth seeing! I’m not sure how many waterfalls there are in Yellowstone National Park, but we saw about ten! We started our trip coming in the North Entrance and these were the first two that we saw.

We did bring bear spray along anytime that we were out hiking. We never needed it, but it was nice to know it was handy just in case! With the volume our children are usually set to, I am not sure we could ever accidentally sneak up on a bear, but you never know!
