In July of 2020 we took a road trip from Minnesota to Yellowstone National Park. On the way, we stopped in Medora, ND to visit Theodore Roosevelt National Park. We stayed the night in Moorhead, MN at my brother’s house, and then drove to Medora in the morning. We got set up at the Medora Campground to spend the night there, and then we saw Theodore Roosevelt National Park that afternoon.
The Medora Campground is right at the edge of Medora and next to the entrance for the park. This was a really quick stop for us along our trip, so we didn’t check out much in the town (until dinner time!), but they have a bunch of fun shops to check out and a very well known musical to see!
We are tent campers, but we aren’t so rugged that we like to sleep right on the ground. So we booked a site with electric so that we could blow up our air mattresses! (And charge our electronics!) We had broken a pole on our old tent, so this was the first night that we had used this tent. A big storm came through that night while we were out eating dinner and we were happy to see that our tent held up through the storm and kept all of our things dry!
The campground is set up right along the Little Missouri River. There is a path that leads to the river.
The path over to the river is a dirt trail that leads through some grasses and sage brush. It’s a quick trail that takes just a minute to get down to the river. I was a little bit nervous that I might see a rattlesnake in the brush, but we made it there safe!
The view of the Badlands along the river is a gorgeous sight!
We saw no snakes, but we did see a mule deer! She was standing about 10 feet off the path and didn’t seem bothered by us at all! She was just eating a snack and looking around. She must be the campground deer!
It was really fun to be so close to a deer in the wild! She never ran off and just stood there eating!
We had a great stay at the Medora Campground. We liked that we were able to get a site with electricity. The showers were big and available when we needed them. The location to the park and the town are perfect. They have both tent and RV sites.
In the morning when we were packing up our tent and gear to hit the road, I was in the tent rolling up the sleeping bags. And I could hear the sounds of a sweet little four year old singing… wait, I think they’re singing the lyrics to the song “Shots” by LMFAO! Is there a PG version of that song? LOL, well good morning world, and it’s time for us to hit the road for more adventure! 🙂
Check out our video about the campground and see the Little Missouri River and the mule deer that was our new friend!
