Theodore Roosevelt National Park: Wind Canyon Trail

Chaos Caravan planned an afternoon at the Theodore National Park in North Dakota. We visited the South Unit near Medora. John and I had visited the park about ten years ago when Kaya was just a baby. Her view of the park on that trip was all from the Baby Bjorn! So this was the first trip for the kids (that they’ll remember)!

One of our first stops inside the park was the Wind Canyon Trail. The trail takes you to an overlook of the Little Missouri River.

The Wind Canyon Trail is a dirt trail about .4 miles long. There are some steep areas and some stairs to get to the very top of the overlook.

The canyon was created by erosion from the wind (hence the name!), as opposed to being created by erosion from water.

When we got to the top of the Wind Canyon Trail, it was in fact, super windy! We could see how it earned that name!

The Wind Canyon is our favorite trail at the park! We had done quite a few of the hiking trails on our last trip, when we had a few days to spend at the park. On this trip, we just had an afternoon to explore, so we took the most time to enjoy the Wind Canyon trail and made quick stops on other parts of the drive. Check out the next post to see more from the Theodore Roosevelt National Park!

If you have a 4th grader, you can get into the National Parks for FREE for the entire year with the Every Kid Outdoors Program. Check out the website at everykidoutdoors.gov to get set up! On our trip, we used the pass at Theodore Roosevelt National Park, Yellowstone National Park, and Devils Tower! Part of the reason with did this particular trip this year, was because of the program. (Also, a nice outdoors-y roadtrip during this COVID year seemed like our best option!)

Thanks for stopping by our blog! We hope we have inspired you to explore this beautiful world of ours and enjoy time with your loved ones!
